A top tip for speech preparation.
When prepping for a presentation or speech (regardless of the occasion or setting) you only need to ask yourself one question repeatedly.
This question will ensure you are:
a) hitting the mark with an engaging talk
b) sticking to the topic at hand
c) providing people with valuable information
d) giving tangible takeaways.
By asking yourself this you will keep your audience’s attention at the forefront of your mind.
Without asking it during your speech preparation stage, you risk going off on unnecessary tangents and boring your listeners on the day.
Remember, speeches and presentations are not about you, they’re about informing your audience.
The question is:
“So what?”
By asking “so what?” about every point or piece of content you are planning to include, you are challenging yourself to explain why it is relevant and how it links back to your given topic or subject matter.
If something doesn’t obviously link back, then remove it. It won’t enhance your talk.
Simple as that.
